"By the Shores of Silver Lake" is an autobiographical children's novel by Laura Ingalls Wilder, published in 1939. It is the fifth book in the Little House series and follows the Ingalls family as they embark on a journey westward to the Dakota Territory. The story begins when Laura, 12 years old, and her family move from Plum Creek, Minnesota, to De Smet, South Dakota, after their older sister, Mary, becomes blind due to scarlet fever. The novel explores themes of family, resilience, and the challenges of pioneer life, as the Ingalls family navigates the harsh conditions of the prairie and the excitement of their first train journey. Laura's character matures as she takes on more adult responsibilities and helps her sister Mary, who is now blind, pursue her education.
