When the Storm Breaks

On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helen slammed into Florida- the strongest storm in recorded history to hit the Big Bend region. AS the 350-mile-wide tempest headed north, it dumped an estimated 40 trillion gallons of rain, causing landslides, unprecedented flooding, and death. In all, 251 people lost their lives.

After the storm, author and photographer Shawn Martin collected ten remarkable stories and captured hundreds of sobering photos.
